27 August 2012             Middleton Cup Semi final & final report plus other news

Norfolk were crowned National County champions on Saturday when they won the coveted Middleton Cup by beating Wiltshire in the final at Beach House Park Worthing by 118 – 114. Earlier in the day they had reached the final by defeating the defending champions Devon 122-118. This was revenge for Norfolk who were beaten by Devon at the same stage last year.

Norfolk started well in the semi final against Devon and gradually built a lead into double figures with Wayne Willgress’s rink covering Mark Turner’s rink who were having a torrid time. As Devon hit back over the closing ends to reduce the deficit to single figures but Norfolk held firm to win and to progress to the final.

For the final Manager Brian Taylor made changes to Mark Turner’s rink by bringing in Chris Willgress and make other positional changes. Their opponents Wiltshire, who had overcome Leicestershire in the other semi final, began the final in strong fashion to open a 10 shot lead at 5 ends, but Norfolk did not let the deficit to build and gradually overcame this to move into a narrow lead at the 15 end stage. The lead then fluctuated over the closing ends and in a tense and exciting finish last end scores by the rinks skipped by Darren Rowsell, Chris Willgress, Peter Boldero & Mervyn King gave Norfolk a cushion of six shots for Philip Barr playing the last end of the match which was successfully defended to give Norfolk the title, for the fifth time the last being in 2006.

After the match Team Manager Brian Taylor said “Going into the semi final we knew we would have a hard match against Devon who won the title last year and have been the dominant county in recent years. We made solid start and as Devon hit back we held our nerve and played some big bowls to win. In the final Wiltshire were a bit of an unknown quantity and although they took an early lead we did not let this build. The last few ends were a bit tense but as in the semi final we played some big shots to get the win. I’d like to pay tribute to the whole squad but would mention Wayne Willgress in particular who overcame the disappointment of losing the Singles final the day before to be one of the star performers in both the semi and the final”.

The Men’s National Championships preceded the Middleton Cup final.

Norfolk Bowling Club’s Wayne Willgress came agonisingly close to taking the National Singles title losing 21-20 in the final to Tom Bishop of the Atherley Bowling Club in Southampton. Willgress was in fine form through the early rounds and brought this form into the final and looked on course to take the title when heavy rain forced a temporary suspension of play.  However on the restart the momentum of the match switched and in a tense finish with the scores tied at 20 all, Bishop scored the deciding shot, on a measure, to take the title

Norfolk’s junior bowlers had qualified for the final stages of the White Rose Trophy and following good wins over Hampshire and Northamptonshire, Norfolk beat Yorkshire by a single shot to reach the final where they met Devon who proved too strong to take the title by 40 shots to 35.

The last of the County finals, for the Hansell’s Cup, takes place on Saturday at Wymondham Dell. In the morning semi finals Lakeside play Upwell whilst Shipdham take on Bradwell with the winners meeting in the final in the afternoon.

Norfolk completed their Eastern Counties League programme with a fine victory in an East Anglian derby against Suffolk at the RG Carter club by 143 shots to 99 taking 17 of the 22 points at stake.

Defeats in the previous two matches meant Norfolk’s chances of taking the League title had already gone but the results from the league matches this season, where Norfolk have won four of their six games, augurs well for the future with several up and coming young bowlers having been blooded into the team.

The remaining County Championship finals have been held at Norfolk BC with George Tubby and Andy Siely of Acle St Edmunds BC and Wayne Willgress of Norfolk BC all achieving double success.

In the Triples the Norfolk BC trio of Charles West, Chris Willgress and Wayne Willgress took the Triples crown by beating Justin Hudson, Ian Whiley and Mervyn Chapman of Wootton Park by 19-14. A count of six shots on the third end proved significant with Wootton always chasing the game from this point. Norfolk BC were able to maintain the lead they built up to take the title, a title they last won in 2009. They were also victorious in 2007 when they went on to take the National title.

After the disappointment in losing both the Singles and Pairs finals last week Wayne Willgress added the inaugural Two Wood Singles title to the Triples when he played Peter Wilkinson of County Arts. In a high quality encounter Willgress took an early lead only for Wilkinson to hit back to level the scores at 13 a piece at 18 ends. As he had done in earlier rounds Willgress was dominant over the closing ends going on to win 17-13.

In the Under 25 singles, 16 year old Josh Baxter of Caister was up against Junior England International Sam King of Hunstanton EBA. King’s greater experience at this level proved to be decisive and although Baxter battled bravely it was King who took the title 21-8.

George Tubby and Andy Siely of Acle who took the Singles and Pairs titles respectively last week won the Fours along with team mates Daniel Seabourne and Simon Elliott. In the final they met Justin Hudson, Simon Peach, Mervyn Chapman and Ian Whiley of Wootton Park. After Wootton Park's disappointment in losing the Triples earlier in the day, Acle proved too strong and when leading 22-7 after 16 ends the match was conceded.

Hunstanton then won the deciding extra end to give them victory, this being the third successive match that they have won on the extra end.

Norfolk’s hopes of winning the Eastern Counties League ended on Saturday when they went down to 123-100 defeat to Bedfordshire at Maulden BC winning on only one rink and taking just 2 of the 22 points at stake.

Although Norfolk made a strong start to the match the lead they had built up was steadily eroded and Bedfordshire ran out comfortable winners, the only silver lining for the County being the victory on Steve Winter’s rink.

After the end of the Eastern Counties League matches attention will switch to the Middleton Cup and the semi final at Worthing on 25th August. Norfolk‘s opponents are now known and they will play the current holders and favourites Devon who in there delayed quarter final beat Oxfordshire by 3 shots.

22 July 2012                  Latest News including County Championships & Middleton Cup

George Tubby of Acle St Edmunds is the new county Singles champion, the second time he has won the title. In the final he beat Wayne Willgress of Norfolk BC 21-10. Tubby bowling superbly took an early lead but when leading 12-8 Willgress converted a four shot deficit into two shots to be only two shots behind and at that stage it looked like Willgress would take control but Tubby maintained his form and conceded no more shots to go on & take the title.

In the semi finals played earlier in the week Tubby beat England International Mervyn King equally convincingly by the same score whilst Willgress had a comfortable 21-11 victory over Acle’s John Colcombe.

There was double disappointment for Willgress where in the final of the Pairs, along with John Tufts he lost to the Acle pairing of John Colcombe & Andy Siely. An early count of five shots put the Acle duo in control and a score of six shots on the 17th end put them firmly ahead. The match was conceded on the 18th end with Acle leading 24-11

In the other semi finals played at Swaffham Town, Peter Wilkinson of County Arts reached his first County finals by beating Karol Mikulik of the GW Staniforth club 16-7 with the match being conceded at 18 ends. In the final he will meet Wayne Willgress.

In the Under 25 Singles, Sam King, went one further that father Mervyn by beating David Smith of Freethorpe. It was Smith who made the better start by taking a 9-3 lead. Junior International then King then hit back to lead 16-12 but Smith rallied to be only 19-18 behind. King then scored singles over the next two ends to win 21-18.

The final of the Lord Fermoy Cup to be held on Thursday (on a home & away basis) will be between Freethorpe and Hunstanton EBA.

In the semi finals Freethorpe, having beaten Premier League teams Wymondham Dell and Acle St Edmunds in earlier rounds, continued their giant killing by beating favourites Norfolk BC 37-35. The other semi final between Hunstanton EBA and Swaffham Town was decided on an extra end after the match was tied 40 shots all after 21 ends. It was Hunstanton who won this end to reach the final.

Norfolk reached the semi final of the Middleton Cup on Saturday when they beat Derbyshire by 116-111 at the Goodwood Bowls Club in Leicester. In the semi final at Worthing in August they will meet the winners of the delayed quarter final tie between Oxfordshire and defending champions Devon.

The match against Derbyshire was a tight affair in the early stages but Norfolk took control over the middle period to establish a 20 plus shots lead. Derbyshire then hit back strongly to reduce the deficit to single figures over the closing ends but Norfolk’s bowlers held their nerve and their greater experience saw them through to victory.

There were good wins for the rinks skipped by Peter Boldero and Philip Barr and these were backed by a win for Darren Rowsell’s rink that included the recalled Justin Hudson from Wootton Park.

After the match manager Brian Taylor said “the match was as hard as I expected. Half way through we looked to be heading for a comfortable win but credit to Derbyshire for they way they hit back. Derbyshire had a chance going into the last end but I felt we deserved to win and it could probably have been a little more comfortable than it actually was. We are all delighted to be back at Worthing again where we will be hoping to go further than we did last year. It looks like we may be playing Devon again though they still have to get through the quarter final and if they do then we will be looking for revenge following our defeat to them last year”

15 July 2012                  Latest News............................

The past week has seen most of the semi finals in the County Championships played with only the singles ties that were due to played on Friday falling foul to the weather.

In the Fours, Acle rinks featured in both semi finals with the possibility of a father & son meeting each other in the final. This was not to be as although Daniel Seabourne, with Andy Siely & his colleagues overcame Norfolk BC’s Jake Willgress to reach his first major County final, Father Tony fell to the Wootton Park four skipped by Ian Whiley. With Siely’s Acle four always in control a family double looked likely for some time but the Wootton Park quartet overcame an early deficit with a strong performance over the latter ends to take their place in the final.

In the Triples defending champions Max Harrison. Rocky Lewis & Peter Boldero from Downham Market) met former National Champions, Charles West, Chris Willgress & Wayne Willgress from Norfolk BC. The Norfolk BC three proved far too strong winning comfortably by 26 shots to 12.

The other semi final threw up the possibility of either an all Norfolk BC final or a double final appearance for Wootton Park. It was Wootton Park who won a tight affair 23-19 and so Justin Hudson, Ian Whiley & Mervyn Chapman reached their second final

Wayne Willgress’s excellent season continued in the Pairs and Two Wood Singles. In the Pairs with John Tufts at lead he beat Freethorpe’s Jamie Howlett & Rob Parker by the narrow margin of 17-16. In the final they will meet John Colcombe & Andy Siely (Acle St Edmund) who overcame father & son Chris & Steve Wells from Swardeston 20-13. In the Two Wood singles for the second match running Willgress won on the last end beating Max Harrison (Downham Market) 15-14.

Two of the County’s rising young bowlers met in the Under 25 Singles and it was Caister’s Josh Baxter who prevailed beating Nathan Watson from Watton 21-16.

The remaining semi finals will be played on Tuesday 17th July at Swaffham Town as follows:-

Under 25 Singles:-

·        Sam King (Hunstanton EBA) -v- David Smith (Freethorpe)

Two Wood Singles

·        Karel Mikulik (GW Staniforth) -v- Peter Wilkinson (County Arts)

Four Wood Singles

·        George Tubby (Acle St Edmund) -v- Mervyn King (Hunstanton EBA)

·

·        John Colcombe (Acle St Edmund) -v- Wayne Willgress (Norfolk BC)

Following the completion of these matches the County Finals programme will be decided but with Norfolk having reached the quarter finals of the Middleton Cup, which is to be played next Saturday, the County finals that were due to be played on that day will be rescheduled.

08 July 2012                  Middleton Cup Report –v- Bedfordshire + other news

Norfolk qualified for the quarter finals of the Middleton Cup in exciting fashion at Maulden Bowls Club on Saturday.

Going into their match against Bedfordshire in second place in the table behind Huntingdonshire they knew that only a convincing victory along with a defeat for Huntingdonshire at Essex would give them any chance of winning the group and thereby qualifying.

The Norfolk/Bedfordshire match was a tight affair from the outset with all six rinks being evenly contested. As the match moved into its final stages news filtered through that Essex were beating Huntingdonshire and if the scores remained as they were then Norfolk would probably need to win the match with four winning rinks to qualify.

With Wayne Willgress’s rink winning 23-9, the overall match result looked in the bag but with Mark Turner’s and Peter Boldero’s rinks suffering agonising last end defeats it came down the other three rinks still playing to the get rink wins required.

Philip Barr’s rink duly obliged with a 2 shot victory and then Darren Rowsell facing a 2 shot deficit on the last end, removed the Bedfordshire shot bowl to score six shots to secure his rink’s win. Finally it was left to Mervyn King to see Norfolk home by securing his rink’s win with his final bowl of the match.

In the quarter finals to be played on Saturday 21st July Norfolk are likely to meet Derbyshire at the neutral venue of the Goodwood club in Leicester.

After the match Manager Brian Taylor said “We knew coming into this match that we still had a chance of reaching the quarter finals but needed a good result here and for the result in the other match to go our way. Once we were aware of the situation in the other match we knew what we needed to do and our boys played some great bowls over the last few ends to get us through”

Rink scores:-

Next Saturday attention turns to the Eastern Counties League when league leaders Norfolk entertain Hertfordshire at the County Arts club in Norwich. With Hertfordshire also unbeaten and in second place in the table, victory for Norfolk in this match could go a long way to them securing the league title.

Brian Taylor has selected the following team which has a mixture of youth and experience.

·        Chris Wells, Liam Stevenson, Jake Willgress & Mark Turner

·        Ollie Allen, Matt Flatman, Roger Guy & Andy Siely

·        Robert Hadingham, Neil Moulton, Steve Wells & Philip Barr

·        Daniel Seabourne, Jack Adcock, Tony Dunton & Darren Rowsell

02 July 2012                  Latest news including County Competitions, Eastern Counties Lge & Middleton Cup

This week has seen the quarter finals of the County Championships at various venues with competitors striving for County titles and qualification for the Bowls England National Championships in August

In the fours held at Aldiss Park, both rinks from Acle St Edmunds progressed to the semi finals. Andy Siely’s four proved too strong for the Wymondham Dell quartet skipped by Alan Coombe winning 24-8. Tony Seabourne’s four had a much tighter match against a determined Hingham Rectory four led by Barry Moody finally winning 21-16.

It was a similar story in the match between Wootton Park & County Arts where an early count of 6 shots by Ian Whiley’s four put them into the lead. The match was nip & tuck from that point and in the end Wootton Park won 19-16.

The final match saw Jake Willgress skipping an experienced Norfolk BC four against Kelvin Rayner’s four from Downham Market. The early stages were close but Norfolk BC ran away over the closing stages to win comfortably 26-11.

In the triples, defending champions Max Harrison, Rocky Lewis & Peter Boldero are on course to retain their title following a closely contested match with Daniel Noble’s North Walsham trio. With the match level at 16 ends Boldero’s triple scored on both of the last two ends to secure a semi final place where they will meet Wayne Willgress’s team from Norfolk BC. The Willgress triple were involved in a one sided match with Eric Rawsthorne Diss triple running out comprehensive winners by 30 shots to 3.

The quarter final between Trevor Webb (North Walsham) & Mervyn Chapman (Wootton Park) was close in the early stages but a change of length by the Wootton triple altered the course of the match and from a 7 all score at 9 ends, Wootton dominated to win 23-8.

The other match featured sets of brothers with Matt & Mark Flatman together with Clive Knights of Norfolk BC taking on the Guy brothers, Greg, Kevin & Roger of Wymondham Dell. It was the Flatman triple that was always in control to win 23-13.

In the pairs there were victories for the combinations from Acle St Edmund, Swardeston, Norfolk BC & Freethorpe.

John Colcombe & Andy Siely (Acle) took early control against Malcolm Coe & Chris Gaul (Gissing) and went on to a comfortable 24-16 victory. It was the same story for John Tufts & Wayne Willgress (Norfolk BC) against David & Colin Bix (Hunstanton EBA) who dominated from the start to win 24-9.

The other ties were much closer affairs. Jamie Howlett & Rob Parker (Freethorpe) were 2 behind at 15 ends against Barry Flatt & Alan Coombe (Wymondham Dell) but won all 6 of the remaining ends to win 21-12. Father & son Chris & Steve Wells (Swardeston) survived a late fight-back from Peter Setchell & John Button (Shouldham) to win 24-20.

The Under 25 Singles saw Josh Baxter (Caister) beat Liam Stevenson (Hunstanton EBA) 21-20. With the scores level at 16 all Baxter scored 4 shots to seemingly take control only to conceded 4 shots on the next end. With Stevenson lying a match winning shot on the next end a fine take-out by Baxter with the last bowl of the match secured him victory 21-20. There was the same score in the match between David Smith (Freethorpe) & Wayne Willgress (Norfolk BC). Smith took an early lead but Willgress fought back hard to at one point have a match lie. Smith saved this and went on to win on the next end.

The semi-final of the singles will feature three previous winners, Mervyn King, George Tubby & Wayne Willgress. The pick of the quarter finals was between John Colcombe (Acle St Edmunds), a former finalist & Andy McNamara (Wootton Park). McNamara recovered from a slow start to pull back and to take the lead 19-16 only for Colcombe to hit back to win 21-19. Tubby was always ahead against John Tufts (Norfolk BC) and won 21-16. Both  recently recalled England International Mervyn King  and Wayne Willgress proved too strong for their opponents, Alan Byford (GW Staniforth)  and Ken Jenkins (Hingham Rectory) both winning 21-9

Three of the 2 wood singles quarter finals have been played. Max Harrison (Downham Market) beat Alan Willer 16-11 and Peter Wilkinson (County Arts) beat Justin Hudson (Wootton Park) 16-9. The third tie between Karel Mikulik (GW Staniforth) & Gino Gallent (Martham) was a much closer affair. The lead changed hands at regular intervals with Mikulik finally securing victory on the last end by 16 shots to 14. The final quarter final between David Brawn (North Walsham EBA) & Wayne Willgress will be played on Tuesday 3rd July at Aldiss Park.
